peloids (Greek: πηλός: blato + -id) or healing mud, a common name for substances created in nature during geological events, which are finely chopped and mixed with water and used for baths and dressings for treatment. Underwater loose sediments are medicinal mud pools. Earthy loose sediments are formed by the action of atmospheric factors on rocks and stones outside of water, which disintegrate into small particles containing up to 98% inorganic substances and less than 10% water. Solan peloids are formed next to salt pans and have a high concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl). – Peloids act physically (with heat, because they are usually heated for therapeutic use, or with cold when used at the site itself) and chemically (because some elements are absorbed through the skin). Their unique thermal properties allow them to be applied to the skin heated to 45 °C and above, without damaging it; thus they are a very suitable medium for thermotherapy. They are most often used in natural spas (→ balneotherapy). Indications for their use include diseases of the movement system, skin diseases and chronic female diseases.
