The specialty of the island of Murter

TISNO BRIDGE

What makes the island of Murter special is the fact that it is connected to the mainland by a bridge that goes over the 38-meters-wide strait which the name of the settlement derives from (strait = tjesnac). Hence, the mentioned connection and resulting higher accessibility of the transport, served as one of the key factors of the early tourism development on the island.

The foundations of the bridge had been laid already at the end of the 18th ct., but the construction was suspended. The bridge was built at the beginning of the 19th ct., however, the increase of the maritime transport required Tisno strait to be deepened which as a result had the change of the existing bridge with a new movable bridge in 1868 that has been renovated and reconstructed several times until today. ”it weighs over 35000 kilograms, it is 70 meters long, and 9 feet wide”. The current bridge was built in 1991.

Nautical maps indicate the depth of 2,1 meters under Tisno bridge, but the problems in the traffic emerge even with the vessels the lightest seagoing condition of which doesn’t cross 1,5 meters, especially at low tide.

The bridge used to be operated manually and swing to allow bigger vessels to go through the channel. it lifts for the same reason today, once a day during the majority of the year, and twice a day during summer months (9-9.30 am, 5-5.30 pm).
